Unknown portrait vol. 5

No wonder that so many guys, were gathering around this topless card dealer.
Why I chose to show this portrait, is not because of this, but because of an option to use your zoom lens in more creative way.

Sandra

Sandra was participating in a photography class, we lost contact after the studies was over, but for my great surprise I found her once in a club DJing - sweet! Lovely low-light portrait.

Rolf Roosalu

Just an emotional and warm portrait of Rolf Roosalu at the rehearsal of Eesti Laul, I believe in 2010. Using the lights of the stage.

Portraits go on, but this time candid ones, but still taken under low-light conditions or using a flash head.

Out of curiosity, if you have seen both weeks photos, can you let me know, which is better - posed or candid?

Unknown portrait vol. 2

A former friends friend needed some stylish photos, showing her make-up skills. She chose the queen era style and painted her cousin's face suitable for that era. Looking good with the costume and all. For the picture just one light from the left with a diffuser was used.

Enar

In Tartu Art School, we had a chance to play with light ant learn more interesting stuff, which the head of the photography department was teaching us. Here we played with the lightbox and used thick saw dust to add a different look to this, otherwise perhaps empty portrait.

Eeva

We drove with Eeva to Haapsalu, which was quite a drive, to take photos of a theatre group for their new play's billboard. We got to meet some famous actors and had fun, while taking their photos. I and to test light and this set - diffused light from the left, falling on the persons face - was the winning one.

Unknown portrait vol. 1

Though I have forgotten his name, he was a lovely portrait model and excellent with this mask. If you would know how he really looked - night and day! Similar light, as in the previous photo, but with a white background and diffused light.

Priit

One of the best portraits I have ever taken in a night club, though you can't see the setting, I love the look and the light on Priit's face. This was achieved with a camera off flash, fired from the top left corner.

Raheeli

Next two weeks in this blog will be dedicated to portraits, especially low-light or artificial light portraits. It is challenging to take photos of people, but even more challenging is to get this great look on your photos, which can only happen because of the light.

Calm vol. 242

Quite a boring photo, I do not like it all, but I like the story behind this bottle of Ale-8-One.
I got to know it while visiting Kentucky, US ten years ago. Ginger drinks are not really a thing in this side of the world, at least they weren't 10 years ago. I really liked the drink, so that after I left, my friend mailed me three bottles of it to Estonia! Wow! When in the States, try it!

From their webpage you can read:

Ale-8’s crisp, clean taste is handcrafted batch by batch using a secret recipe passed down through four generations. Lightly carbonated and made with real ginger and citrus, experience a flavor that pops, especially when chilled.  Since 1926, we have been committed to delivering the one-of-a-kind taste of the original Ale-8 and remained loyal, steady and proudly unconventional.

Anne Heat chimney

I mean it is really not called like that, but what I mean is the former boilerhouse, which for a long time was an active spot providing heat in Tartu. For years it has been standing without use. In a way like an iconic item in the Tartu horizon. For some time conversations have been held about demolishing this high and thick chimney.

Katrin Siska

Katrin Siska was one of the three members of Vanilla Ninja. It was an Estonian all-female rock trio which enjoyed chart success in a number of countries across Europe, especially in Estonia, Germany and Austria.

The group formed in 2002 and released their self-titled debut album Vanilla Ninja, containing songs in both English and Estonian, the following year. After their debut single "Club Kung Fu" was released in 2003, the girls had many hits in Central Europe, including "Tough Enough", "When the Indians Cry", "Blue Tattoo" and "I Know". They also entered Estonian national selections for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2003 and 2007, failing both times, but proved successful in 2005, when they represented Switzerland with the song "Cool Vibes". The group finished 8th in the Eurovision Song Contest final, despite topping the leader board at the half-way stage. Vanilla Ninja were very popular in their native Estonia and have had a brand of both ice cream and curd snack named after them, marketed exclusively in their homeland due to their celebrity status in Estonia.
