Mercat Fira de Bellcaire

I couldn't say any better, so let the Oh-Barcelona speak instead of me:

Barcelona an extremely glamorous city when it comes to shopping, home to the very best boutiques, art galleries and dozens of modern shopping centres selling the latest in technology, clothes and books. Today we are going to introduce a completely different kind of shopping centre; without any of the glamour, luxury, latest technology or best sellers…It is a place where time has come to a standstill and invites us to feel true nostalgia, as we get lost among ancient treasures, discover objects that take us back in time to our childhood days or buy vinyl records that our parents and grandparents would have danced to.

The Mercat Fira de Bellcaire is one of the oldest markets in Europe and dates back to the XIV century. More commonly known as the Mercat dels Encants Vells which translated from Catalan, literally means the Market of Old Charms, I couldn’t think of a more appropriate name since it really is a market with a great deal of old charms.

Covering an area of 15,000m2 there are close to 500 tradesmen offering products and merchandise that has no place in any other sales outlets. Second-hand articles of all kinds including clothing, furniture, lamps, pictures, sculptures, records, instruments, fabrics and much more, as well as new articles on sale.
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday an auction is held from 7-9 in the morning, representing the most important exponent but not the only one.

The market also provides a striking contrast between the old articles on display and the Torre Agbar (one of the most modern architectural structures in Barcelona, and standing at 145 metres it is the third tallest building in the Catalan capital, and the work of the French architect Jean Nouvel who was inspired by the bell towers of the Sagrada Familia).

Let yourself be carried away by the magic of the encants and join the more than 100,000 people who visit the Mercat Fira de Bellcaire every week in search of ancient treasures…
