O, Kerly! Paris, Prague, Riga—when I was young I used to think I would, like Hemingway and Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein and Henri [sic] Miller, travel widely, live in major cities and write the greatest American novel of all. Alas, alas, except for Puerto Rico and Antigua in the once upon a time British West Indies, I have traveled little, drank much and failed to write the great American novel. Now, I am like Dick Diver in Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night, ending my life in a backwoods, a recluse, though not in the Finger Lakes Region of upper New York State like Diver, but on the Coast of Washington instead. Actually the story fit better when we lived in Spokane Washington. Now, we are at least only 2 1/2 hours from Seattle and a mere 10 minutes from Portland, two fairly hip cities that one can be okay with, but, actually, I've reached the stage where I'm happy to sit down with a good book and let the world perk along like a Starbucks gone mad.
:) thanks Geo, I enjoyed reading of your comment a lot. If one is happy in backwoods, reading a good book in the porch, then I guess this is happiness.
Aitäh Liisu :) Mulle endale meeldib alumine, sest seal on tegevusel roll, need teised on tõesti pelgalt sügavusteravuse näited, mis siiski annavad hästi hämmastavat objektiivi omadust edasi.
